history: http://odinsphere.wikia.com/wiki/Oswald

personality:

Oswald is not a man who fears death but of dying after living a life without having loved and been loved. Upon this revelation we learn the truth of Oswald's character, that he is in reality a very lonely and sad person. In the face of losing the bond he believed he shared with his adoptive father Melvin, Oswald grows quite depressed (so depressed that the Halja he was able to keep at bay before take him to the Netherworld with no difficulty at all). We see that finding out the only connection he nursed throughout his life was a lie, that Oswald does not form bonds easily, yet he values and wishes for them more than anything else. Had Melvin's lie not been exposed, Oswald would have died happily in his servitude believing his father had cherished him.

Due to his upbringing as a soldier and at Melvin's insistence that he become as strong as can be (after all, don't all parents wish for their children to be powerful?), Oswald shows signs of lacking in social niceties, and a lack of sympathy towards strangers and those in the way of his goals. Many of his missions and duties have resulted in him taking many lives and he has long since grown desensitized to death and violence. Of all the main characters, he is the one with no reservations to do what needs to be done, be it with his sharp tongue, or even sharper blade. Oswald can be a cruel person and does not hold himself on high moral ground, as he tells an enemy in the later half of his storyline, you must have mistaken me for a better man. If you have earned Oswald's ire, he will not hold back.

But as his prologue tells us, even in the greatest darkness can tenderness lurk. For all of his abrasiveness and violent acts, Oswald displays alongside the bad, the good, man is capable of. We see him spare Gwendolyn in battle when he feels an odd connection to her, then later on empathizing with her and her own relationship with her father. He takes a stand and asserts her personhood in the face of her objectification (when she is used as a bargaining chip both by Odin and the Wise man Skuldi). He seeks to learn and know her in a natural way, unwilling to force her to love him when he first hears of a sleeping spell cast upon her where she will love the one who awakens her with a kiss (later he will learn her heart cannot be manipulated and wakes her knowing she could very well hate him). Oswald is capable of great emotion, though he is inexperienced, he uses much romantic language with Gwendolyn, sharing fragile but sincere emotions.

Because of his lack of experience in building social standing, Oswald can be quite suspicious and awkward in conversations. It takes time for him to truly trust and time for him to truly feel comfortable. In intimate situations, Oswald's low self-esteem is evident, as he sinks back into depression when he believes, after Gwendolyn is awakened and wed to him, that both Odin and Gwendolyn only sought to use him for obtaining the ring Titrel. Rather than assume it is a misunderstanding, Oswald takes it as the truth and sinks into an ugly abyss of emotion.

abilities/powers:

Swordsmanship; Oswald is a skilled knight, well practiced and deadly with a sword. His sword in particular, the Belderiver, is one of the five jeweled weapons (Psyphers) found throughout the world of Odin Sphere. The jewels, brought from the Netherworld, allow the weapons to grow in power, collecting phozons: the remains of/what becomes of the dead. The Belderiver itself is known to curse the wielder over an extended period of time due to its direct link to the Netherworld Queen Odette and the pact that comes along with its use (power to the wielder, allowing the evil essence to grow and the wielders life to slowly be drained from them, eventually transforming them into a mad, forlorn creature called a Devastator).

Additional powers granted by the psyphers:

Invisibility; a temporary cloaking power that leaves the caster unseen.
Phozon Burst; a collection of phozons built up and released at a high concentration of power.
Cyclone; a column of wind is summoned and for a moment of time, rips through the air and all that occupy it.

Shadow Abilities; As part of his deal with Odette, Oswald is granted access to power that allows him to shroud himself in darkness and harness its power. In this state, though it is not permanent, it lasts a lengthy enough time for him to take advantage of his increased power and speed. When he has reached his limit and reverts back to normal, there are a few seconds of cool down time where he has become winded and is vulnerable to enemy attack.

In the beginning of his canon, the continued use of the Belderiver and his Shadow form slowly cost him his life, leaving his body feeling stiffer and colder, much like a corpse. However, his canon point where I am apping him is after he makes a new deal with Odette and she restores his powers, allowing him to function fully as he once did.

His own abilities include amazing agility, being able to jump to great heights, and running long distances easily. He also knows the bare basics of his home world's alchemy.

For all his wisdom, Skuldi was just another old fool. Trapped between his plated armor and the sewer walls, he stared over at Oswald, gnarled face still as a statue. He could see in his eyes he was still scheming, thinking of what he could do now that the truth was already known, Gweldolyn was no longer here but in the den of the Inferno King. Gwendolyn had been traded as if she was a bargaining chip, another stone to cast aside when the load became too heavy.

For his callous treatment of her, Oswald wanted to shatter his bones so thoroughly his heart will weep.

He recalled the feeling of his own heart breaking, when Melvin's words transformed into talons and ripped his heart out of his chest, the crushing strength of his lies squeezing the life out of it. He never wanted Gwendolyn to know that pain, to carry it deep within the cavity of her chest as he had.

Skuldi will pay, and he will pay now.

Belderiver in hand, he moved as if to turn.

"You called her bait."

"Eh!?"

"You must have mistaken me for a better man."

The first strike always was the easiest and Oswald does not miss.

case no: Random is fine.
